GOOGLE ADS VS FACEBOOK ADS FOR SERVICE BUSINESSES.
One catches people who need you today. The other reaches people who'll need you later. Here's when each one makes sense, what the leads are really like and how to split your budget.
Here's the simplest way I can explain the difference. Google Ads is someone walking into your shop and saying "I need a plumber." Facebook Ads is you standing outside yelling "anyone need a plumber?" at people scrolling past cat videos.
Both can work. They just work very differently, and mixing them up is how a lot of business owners end up thinking "ads don't work for us." Let's sort it out.
The quick answer
- Google Ads catches people actively searching. Higher intent, higher cost per click, usually better leads.
- Facebook and Instagram ads reach people who aren't looking yet. Cheaper clicks, colder leads.
- For most service businesses, start with Google. Add Facebook once Google is working, starting with retargeting.
- Visual, seasonal or "nice to have" services (detailing, landscaping, med spas) get more out of Facebook than emergency services do.
Section 01Intent vs interruption
This is the whole game, really.
Google is intent. Nobody searches "water heater replacement near me" for fun. They've got cold showers and a problem to solve. Your ad shows up right when they're ready to call someone.
Facebook is interruption. The person is scrolling through their cousin's vacation photos. They weren't thinking about you. Your ad has to grab their attention, make them want something and get them to act, all before they scroll past to the next meme.
That doesn't make Facebook bad. It makes it a different tool. You wouldn't use a hammer to tighten a bolt.
| Google Ads | Facebook / Instagram | |
|---|---|---|
| Reaches | People searching right now | People who might need you later |
| Cost per click | Higher | Lower |
| Lead quality | Usually warmer, ready to book | Usually colder, needs follow-up |
| Best for | Urgent and high-intent services | Visual, seasonal and promo-driven services |
| What sells it | Relevance, proof, speed | Photos, video, offers |
Section 02The cost trap
On paper, Facebook almost always looks cheaper. One contractor benchmark from JobNimbus put Facebook clicks around $2–$5 and Google clicks around $6–$15, with Facebook leads also coming in cheaper on average.
Here's the catch. A cheaper lead isn't a cheaper customer. Facebook leads often come from instant forms where people tap a button and their details auto-fill. Easy to submit. Also easy to forget you exist ten minutes later. I've seen Facebook campaigns with great cost per lead and terrible cost per booked job, because half the people never picked up when the business called back.
Facebook leads are a bit like people who click "interested" on a Facebook event. Lovely gesture. You'll never see them.
Pano's take
Judge both platforms by cost per booked job, not cost per lead. That one number settles most "Google vs Facebook" arguments pretty fast. More on that math in What Google Ads Actually Costs.
Section 03When each one makes sense
Lean on Google when…
- Your work is urgent or needs-based: plumbing, HVAC repair, locksmiths, auto glass, legal help.
- You want leads that are ready to book now.
- You have the capacity to take on jobs this week.
Add Facebook when…
- Your service is visual: detailing, landscaping, pressure washing, renovations, med spa treatments. Before-and-after photos do the selling.
- You run seasonal promos: spring cleanups, AC tune-ups, holiday specials.
- You want to stay top of mind so people think of you first when they do need you.
- You want to retarget people who already visited your website from Google but didn't call.

Section 04The combo that actually works
The best setup I see for service businesses isn't Google or Facebook. It's Google first, then Facebook backing it up:
- Google Ads brings in the high-intent traffic. People search, click, land on your page.
- Most of them don't call right away. They're comparing, checking reviews, asking their partner.
- Facebook and Instagram retarget them. They see your reviews, your before-and-after photos and a reason to call, while they're scrolling that evening.
- They come back and book. Often by searching your business name, which is the cheapest click you'll ever pay for.
Retargeting is usually the cheapest, easiest Facebook campaign to start with, because you're only showing ads to people who already know who you are.
Section 05How I'd split the budget
Every business is different, but here's my usual starting point:
- Just starting out: 100% Google. Get the leads coming, get your tracking working, learn what converts.
- Google is working well: move roughly 10–20% into Facebook and Instagram retargeting.
- Visual or seasonal business with good photos: you can push Facebook higher, sometimes a third of the budget or more, for promos and awareness.
Then let the numbers decide. Whichever platform gets you booked jobs cheaper gets more money next month. No loyalty, no feelings. Just math.
FAQQuick answers
Is Google Ads or Facebook Ads better for a service business?
For most service businesses, Google Ads should come first, because it reaches people actively searching for your service. Facebook works best as a second layer, especially for retargeting, visual services and seasonal promotions.
Why are Facebook leads cheaper?
Clicks cost less and forms are easier to submit, often with details auto-filled. That makes leads cheaper but usually colder, so more of them don't answer or don't book. Compare cost per booked job, not cost per lead.
Should I run both Google and Facebook ads?
Once your Google Ads are working and tracking properly, adding Facebook retargeting is usually a smart, low-cost next step. It reminds people who visited your site to come back and book.
