WHAT GOOGLE ADS ACTUALLY COSTS A SERVICE BUSINESS.
Real numbers for Canada and the US: what you'll pay per click, per lead and per booked job, and how to set a budget that actually works instead of one that just feels safe.
"How much does Google Ads cost?" is the question I get asked more than anything else. And the most common answer out there is "it depends," which is about as helpful as asking how much a truck costs and getting told "well, what kind of truck?"
So let's actually answer it. With real numbers, real examples and the one number that matters way more than cost per click.
The quick answer
- Most local service businesses start somewhere around $1,500–$3,000 a month in ad spend.
- Home service clicks average around $8 each, and leads land roughly between $50 and $150, depending on the trade and the city.
- Legal, roofing and other high-ticket services can cost a lot more per click, and that's fine if the jobs are worth it.
- The number to judge it by isn't cost per click. It's cost per booked job.
Section 01The three things you're actually paying for
When people talk about "Google Ads cost," they usually mean one thing. There are actually three:
- Ad spend. What you pay Google for clicks. This goes straight to Google, and you control it with a daily budget.
- Management. What you pay someone to run it, if you're not doing it yourself. More on fees below.
- The stuff around it. A landing page that converts, call tracking, and your time. Skip these and the first two get way more expensive, because you'll pay for clicks that never turn into anything.
In Canada, there's a sneaky fourth one. Google charges GST/HST on your ad spend unless you've added your GST/HST number to your billing settings. That's up to 13% extra in Ontario, just for not filling in a box. Go check yours. I'll wait.
Section 02Why the "average cost per click" is useless
You'll see stats like "the average Google Ads click in Canada costs $1.58." Technically true. Also completely meaningless for you. That average includes people selling phone cases and t-shirts. A plumber is not competing with phone cases.
Here's what service businesses actually pay, based on recent industry benchmarks:
| Industry | Cost per click | Cost per lead |
|---|---|---|
| Home services (average) | ~$8 | ~$91 |
| Plumbing | $10–$25 | $90–$200 |
| HVAC | $12–$30 | $100–$250 |
| Roofing | $15–$35 | $150–$300 |
| All industries, Canada | ~$1.58 | ~$23 per conversion |
Mostly US benchmark data from 2025–2026 (sources at the bottom). Canadian numbers tend to be in a similar range for trades, and big cities always cost more than small towns.
Law firms, med spas and other high-ticket services sit at the top end. A personal injury click in a big city can run well past $100. Sounds crazy until you remember one signed case can be worth tens of thousands.
And costs are going up. One big benchmark found cost per lead rose for about 69% of home service businesses last year, by roughly 10% on average. That's not a reason to panic. It's a reason to stop wasting money, because sloppy accounts feel those increases way more than tight ones.
Section 03The number that actually matters: cost per job
Here's where most business owners get it wrong. They see an $80 lead and think "that's expensive." But a lead isn't the finish line. A booked job is.
Let's say leads cost you $90 and you close 1 out of every 3. That's $270 to win a job. Now, is that good?
- If your average job is $400, it's tight. You need to lower your cost per lead or raise your close rate.
- If your average job is $1,500, that's a fantastic deal. You should probably be spending more.
- If your customers come back every year (pest control, cleaning, HVAC maintenance), it's even better, because you only pay to get them once.
Pano's take
The cheapest lead isn't the goal. The most profitable customer is. I'd rather pay $120 for someone who books a $2,000 job than $30 for someone who wanted a free quote and ghosted you.
Section 04How to set your budget (without guessing)
Here's the simple version I use as a starting point:
Why 10 clicks a day? Because with less than that, you'll be waiting months to learn anything useful. A few quick examples:
| Business | Rough CPC | Starting budget |
|---|---|---|
| Junk removal, smaller city | ~$5 | ~$1,500 / month |
| Plumber, GTA or a big US metro | ~$12 | ~$3,600 / month |
| Personal injury lawyer, big city | $100+ | Much more, or a very tight focus |
Examples to show the math. Your real click costs depend on your city, competition and how well the account is built.
If the number scares you, don't spread a small budget thin across every service and every city. Pick your best service and your best area and own it. Better to be the first thing people see in one neighbourhood than invisible in five.
Section 05What makes your costs go up (or down)
- Where you are. Toronto clicks cost more than Thunder Bay clicks. Same as rent.
- How many competitors are bidding. More businesses in the auction means higher prices.
- The season. AC repair in July, furnace repair in January. Demand goes up, prices follow.
- Your ad quality. Google gives relevant ads a discount. A sharp ad can beat a bigger bid.
- Your landing page. A page that converts turns the same clicks into more leads, which drops your cost per lead without touching your bids.
- Your tracking. If Google can't see which clicks become customers, it can't find you more of them.
Notice that only the first three are out of your control. The rest is all account work. That's where a good setup pays for itself.
Section 06What about Local Services Ads?
If your industry qualifies for Local Services Ads, you pay per lead instead of per click. SearchLight Digital's 2026 benchmark of nearly 900 contractors put LSA at around $53 per lead, compared to roughly $104 per lead for regular Google Ads.
Cheaper, right? Usually. But you get less control, fewer services covered and not every industry qualifies. For most businesses that can run both, using both is the best setup. I compare them properly in Google Ads or Local Services Ads?

Section 07What management costs (and what to watch for)
If you hire someone, you'll usually see one of these models:
| Model | Typical range | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Flat monthly fee | ~$400–$2,500 | Make sure you know what's included |
| % of ad spend | ~10–20% | They earn more when you spend more |
| Setup fee | Varies | Fine, as long as you own what gets built |
Ranges quoted by Canadian agencies for 2026.
I charge a flat monthly fee, separate from your ad spend, for one simple reason: I never want to be in a spot where telling you to spend more makes me more money. If I tell you to raise your budget, it's because the numbers say so.
Whoever you hire, three non-negotiables: you own the ad account, no long-term contract, and reports that show leads and cost per lead, not just clicks and pretty charts.
FAQQuick answers
What's the minimum budget for Google Ads?
There's no official minimum, but in my experience going below about $1,000 to $1,500 a month makes it hard to get enough data to optimize for most service businesses. If that's your ceiling, focus on one service and one area.
Do I pay Google before or after?
Most accounts are billed automatically as you spend, either at the end of the month or when you hit a billing threshold. You set a daily budget, and Google won't go meaningfully over it across the month.
Is Google Ads cheaper in Canada than the US?
Often a little, especially outside the big cities, but not always. Toronto and Vancouver can be just as competitive as many US metros. Your specific city and industry matter way more than the country.
